The 2025 Giles Distinguished Professor Lecture featuring Novotny is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Old Main Academic Center, Room 1000. A public reception will follow.

Novotnyā€™s lecture ā€œInternational Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ): From UNESCO to MSUā€ is part of the global celebration of the IYQ, which this year marks 100 years since the birth of quantum mechanics and highlights the fieldā€™s growing cutting-edge breakthroughs in quantum computing, communication and encryption. It will provide an engaging exploration of the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics, from Schrƶdingerā€™s cat to the strange world of qubits, superposition and entanglement.

Novotny, an internationally recognized scholar in quantum science and technology, also will examine MSUā€™s role in shaping the future of quantum research and address the fieldā€™s pressing question: Is quantum computing in 2025 just hype, or is it the next big revolution?

The William L. Giles Distinguished Professorship is one of MSUā€™s highest honors, recognizing faculty who have achieved national or international prominence through outstanding research, teaching and service, while the MSUā€™s Giles Professorship Lecture Series highlights the groundbreaking work of its most distinguished faculty as well as external researchers.
