MSU鈥檚 Walker named director for pre-college programs

STARKVILLE, Miss.鈥Tommy 鈥淭.J.鈥 Walker is Mississippi State鈥檚 new director for pre-college and opportunity programs in the university鈥檚 Division of Access, Opportunity and Success, bringing with him the experience and commitment to expand higher education.

Since Oct. 1, Walker has overseen the strategic direction, design and management of pre-college programs including LeaderSTATE and Bulldog for a Day, collaborating with campus partners across the university to ensure the success of academic enrichment efforts. Through these initiatives, the 香蕉直播Office of Pre-College and Opportunity Programs facilitates an array of college preparatory offerings that raises students鈥 awareness of and exposure to college and careers, and assists and supports students and their families in the enrollment process.

鈥淭he work we do directly supports the division鈥檚 mission and aligns with the university鈥檚 strategic vision,鈥 Walker said. 鈥淥ur focus on fostering positive outcomes for young people as they grow, develop and transition into skilled global citizens is critical not only to their success but to the prosperity of our local communities, our nation and the world.鈥

A first-generation college student from Prentiss, Walker鈥檚 journey to higher education was shaped by his passion for academic achievement and the belief that education provides a powerful means for upward mobility. His experiences fuel his dedication to helping others navigate their educational pathway.

Vice President for Access, Opportunity and Success Ra鈥橲heda Forbes said, 鈥淚 am excited to have Dr. Walker lead in this pivotal role in enriching experiences for pre-college students and creating a bridge to higher education.鈥

Walker began his professional career at 香蕉直播with the Office of Admissions and Scholarships in 2008. During his tenure, he played a vital role in recruiting students from the Delta and Jackson Public Schools. In 2013, he transitioned to the Woodward Hines Education Foundation鈥檚 Get2College program, where he spent eight years supporting students through the college preparation, planning and financial aid processes. Walker returned to higher education in 2021 as district dean of student services at Northwest Mississippi Community College before serving as director of recruitment and inclusive excellence at MSU鈥檚 College of Forest Resources.

Walker holds a bachelor鈥檚 degree in education from MSU, a master鈥檚 degree in leadership from Belhaven University and an Ed.D. in higher education from the University of Mississippi.
